What to Bring for Camps and Workshops

Commuter Students

Commuter students will want to wear and/or pack accordingly each day. Please note the below lists are our summer team’s recommended items and may not be exhaustive or applicable to all students.

Some one-week programs, like Discover Engineering at UM, may require specific items/apparel that will be listed in the summer program logistics email sent two weeks before the program start date.

Apparel

  • active wear (for outdoor activities)
  • light jacket
  • comfortable shoes
  • masks
  • long pants and closed-toe shoes (for lab-based activities)
  • umbrella / rain jacket (if rain is in the forecast)

School Supplies

  • notebooks
  • pens/pencils
  • laptop or tablet (may be recommended for some programs, not required)
  • backpack

Medication and Medical Supplies

  • personal first aid kit
  • sunscreen
  • any medication taken regularly

Important Note: If your student suffers from an allergy or any other condition, please make sure that they have their medication with you at all times and know how to properly administer to themselves. Please communicate any medical needs or concerns on the required medical form.

Please note that staff members, instructors, and counselors cannot distribute medicine to students, including over-the-counter medications.


Residential Students

Residential students will want to pack accordingly. Please note the below lists are our summer team’s recommended items and may not be exhaustive or applicable to all students.

Room Supplies and Toiletries

  • Twin XL sheets, blanket/comforter
  • pillow
  • clothes hangers
  • towel and washcloths
  • personal bath supplies (soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc.)

Note for International Students: You will receive a linen pack at arrival with a set of bed sheets, a blanket, a pillow, and a towel.

Cleaning and Laundry Supplies

  • broom and dustpan
  • cleaning wipes

School Supplies

  • notebooks

Miscellaneous and Optional Items

The following items are optional and may be based on personal preferences.

  • food / drinks (water, soda, etc.) / snacks

  • small padlock (to secure valuables)

  • mini-fridge

What NOT to Pack!

Items and Activities Not Allowed in Residence Halls (this list is not all inclusive):

ALCOHOL, ILLEGAL DRUGS, CANDLES, INCENSE, SMOKING / VAPING, WEAPONS, COOKING APPLIANCES (personal toaster ovens, George Foreman style grills), PETS, HALOGEN LAMPS, DOUBLE-STICK TAPE, DUCT TAPE, TAMPERING OF FIRE SAFETY EQUIPMENT, REMOVAL OF FURNITURE FROM ROOMS OR COMMON AREAS, HANGING OR THROWING THINGS OUT WINDOWS, DAMAGING WALLS, DAMAGING FURNITURE, DAMAGING VENDING MACHINES, FIGHTING, STEALING, VANDALISM, HARASSMENT, HALL SPORTS, AND LOUD NOISES
