Welcome to the University of Mississippi!

This site will serve as your central hub for all logistics information and general communications related to the JumpStart for Incoming Ole Miss Freshmen program, hosted by the Office of Pre-College Programs and the Division of Outreach and Continuing Education.

Some JumpStart participants may also be participating in the Arabic Language Flagship Program, Chinese Language Flagship Program, FASTrack, and Grove Scholars in the same session. Please note the below information is for JumpStart in general and may not fully apply to those participating in one of the aforementioned programs.

All JumpStart sessions occur in the current academic year 2024-2024 (or Summer 2024 in some instances). The 2024-2025 academic year starts the following Fall semester. Please note summer applications and processes may refer to the current academic year versus the one you are set to attend in the Fall.

Before Starting Your JumpStart Session (click to expand)

Summer is just around the corner! Our office is busy making sure you have an amazing experience this summer. This section contains everything you need to know to prepare for your summer at the University of Mississippi.

Before you arrive, make sure you complete the following:

A. Register for Ole Miss Freshmen Orientation

JumpStart participants are required to attend an Ole Miss Freshmen Orientation session prior to their JumpStart session.

Why should I attend a Freshmen Orientation BEFORE my JumpStart session? Aside from learning about the University of Mississippi and all of the important information freshmen need to know, students meet with their academic advisor during or immediately after their Orientation session and then register for Summer/Fall 2024 courses. For the purposes of JumpStart, you must register for Summer courses before arrival. The JumpStart Office cannot advise or register students for their Summer 2024 classes.

B. Apply for Summer Housing

JumpStart participants are required to live on campus in summer housing provided by the UM Department of Student Housing.

Can I live off-campus in Oxford and commute to campus each day? NO. It is a requirement for ALL JumpStart participants to live on-campus for the duration of their JumpStart session.

Can I move into my assigned Fall housing assignment in the summer? No. First and Second Session participants must live in summer-designated housing–  not your assigned Fall housing.

C. Complete the Summer Financial Aid Application on my.olemiss.edu (if applicable)

ONLY JumpStart students in the Opportunity Track, Grove Scholars, Arabic Flagship, and Chinese Flagship receive the JumpStart Scholarship. Scholarship will vary based on track and/or special program.

Do I need to complete the FAFSA prior to my JumpStart session? The only reason a FAFSA should be on file is ONLY IF you plan to received a federal grant or loan to pay for summer.

Do I need to complete the FAFSA to receive the JumpStart scholarship? No. The JumpStart scholarship does not require the FAFSA to be on file.

Where is my scholarship? I do not see it on my Award Notification. Our office does not load scholarships until AFTER they have officially checked-in with the JumpStart staff at the JumpStart Welcome Dinner. Our staff will notify students when it is time to accept their scholarship award on my.olemiss.edu.

D. Attend Ole Miss Freshmen Orientation

Students (and parents) should take advantage of their time at their Ole Miss Freshmen Orientation session. This is the time to learn more about the University of Mississippi, get to know about important services and opportunities, and meet fellow students about to start their college journey alongside you. During or immediately after Orientation, you will complete the following:

  • meet with an academic advisor to discuss your degree’s curriculum and select potential courses to take in the Summer 2024 AND Fall 2024 sessions
  • register for Summer and Fall courses – in that order

E. Meeting with Your Academic Advisor

You will meet with an Academic Advisor even if you have selected your major or declared undecided. Your advisor will discuss your degree’s curriculum and help you navigate which classes would be a best fit for your major or potential path. When meeting with your advisor, you will need to tell them that you are taking Summer classes with JumpStart and need help selecting those classes as well. Note: there is not an identifier on their files to reflect that you are a JumpStart participant. Academic advisors do not know if you are in JumpStart or not.

JumpStart participants are required to enroll in at least a minimum numbers of credit hours for each session enrolled.

  • First Session = 6 credit hours
  • Second Session = 6 credit hours

If your Academic Advisor needs more information about the program, please direct them to our Advisors Guide to JumpStart below.

F. Selecting Your Summer Classes

Before Orientation, you can view all summer course offerings on my.olemiss.edu using the Course Schedule module. The JumpStart staff is unable to advise students what courses they need to take during the summer. However, we can recommend summer courses that you can discuss with your academic advisor to see if they are applicable to your degree plan. We recommend students take summer courses that fit your academic strengths. For example, if you are not strong in Math, you may want to leave that type course until the Fall or Spring semesters. Please note that 13-14 weeks of a course content for the Fall/Spring semesters are fit in the course of two to four weeks in the summer sessions.

Many of our recommended courses fulfill the general education or core curriculum credits needed for most degree programs. Please note that the list of recommended courses is not indicative of what is currently available for summer registration. G. Register for Summer then Fall Courses on my.olemiss.edu

After meeting with your academic advisor, they will lift the Advisor Hold off your university account. This will allow you to register for courses. The first step is to add courses to “My Favorites” in my.olemiss.edu. You can do this even before you meet with your academic advisor if you have certain courses and sections in mind, making it easier when you actually register for those courses.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You MUST register for Summer session courses BEFORE the Fall semester courses. If you register for Fall courses first, you could potentially cause a system issue that will not allow you to register for Summer session courses since it will change your enrollment status. This issue can be corrected but it can take considerable time.

JumpStart students are required to enroll in at least a minimum number of credit hours for each session enrolled.

  • First Session = 6 credit hours
  • Second Session = 6 credit hours

H. Request a Parking Permit

If you are bringing your own vehicle and have it parked on campus through the duration of the Summer session, you MUST register for a parking permit.

I. Pack Your Bags!

For a comprehensive list of what to bring, please visit our What To Pack page below– We do not recommend bringing all of the items/furniture you plan to bring for the Fall semester as you will need to move-out of your designated summer housing if attending First and/or Second Session.

Please note this page is general to all summer programs offered by the Office of Pre-College Programs and may contain some items not necessary for you to pack.

JumpStart Programming and Support

JumpStart Sessions

In addition to attending classes and keeping up with coursework, JumpStart students are required to attend multiple workshops throughout the session – Adulting 101 and Brain Training. The purposes of these sessions is to provide students with a toolbox of skills that will support their academic success and independence as a young adult. Attendance is required.

Adulting 101

Adulting 101 workshops will introduce students to life skills that will help them build their own independence, set goals for themselves, and learn how to navigate college life.

Brain Training

Brain Training sessions are all about the academic success skills that ALL students need regardless of their academic record in high school. College is very different from high school in not only difficulty but also structure and responsibilities of the student.

Academic Support Skills

The Office of Pre-College Programs wants to make sure students are given the academic supports they need to succeed during the summer. Even the best students need some help from time to time.

Peer Leaders

Our summer staff includes college students, who will lead and mentor the students throughout the summer. Peer Leaders are hand-picked student leaders on the Ole Miss campus that are vetted thoroughly and undergo semester-long training to be a peer leader. Our peer leaders know the ropes of navigating and succeeding on a college campus. Peer leaders can connect students with departments that may offer tutoring or supplemental instruction to compliment their courses.

Community

Participants will be assigned to a community. Each community will be led by a Peer Leader. Peer Leaders will organize recreational and social activities some afternoons during the summer. Students are expected to be active in their assigned community.

Financials and Scholarships

A. Complete the Summer Financial Aid Application
(if applicable)

Program participants will need to complete the Summer Financial Aid Application on my.olemiss.edu. JumpStart staff will send details and instructions via email.

B. Accept your Scholarship Awards
(if applicable)

Program participants will need to accept all scholarship awards under Award Notification in their my.olemiss.edu portal. JumpStart staff will send details and instructions via email.

C. Check your Bursar Account

Program participants will need to review their UM Bursar account statement in their my.olemiss.edu portal. Your account will be charged as different expenses (tuition, housing, meals, etc.) are uploaded. Some expenses may not appear until closer to the end of the session due to processing delays by some departments.

If applicable, scholarship awards will not credit students’ accounts until all steps are completed to accept scholarship awards and the Office of Financial Aid has disbursed said awards. For most students, scholarships will not have disbursed until the last week of the June/July Summer session.

Important note for parents/guardians: Your child will receive an overdue notice on or around the 15th of the month (June or July) that may mention collections. This is an automatic email and physically mailed document from the Bursar’s office that is sent to every student at the University if they have a balance. If you are not expecting a scholarship, we encourage you to make a payment to your Bursar account to bring it current.

Why are you receiving this message if you are expecting a scholarship? You have an overdue balance because your scholarships have not been processed, accepted, and disbursed to your account. This is a normal occurrence for our participants. There is no need to worry right now because there are still ongoing processes.

Do I need to pay now if I am expecting a scholarship? If you expect to receive a scholarship, we suggest that you hold off paying your account until all your scholarships have disbursed. Not all of your expenses may have been charged to your account just yet (i.e. housing). Scholarships will be processed by the Office of Financial Aid.

If you decide to pay now before scholarships have disbursed, your account will be credited for the scholarship and anything not covered by the scholarship and initial payment will be refunded by the Bursars Office via check or direct deposit (if setup).

End of Session Information

A. Check your Final Exam Schedule

Final exams vary by the date and time of courses. You will want to compare your course time to the date and time your final exam will be given. Examinations should conclude in three hours and twenty minutes unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

B. Prepare for Check-Out / Move-Out

Before leaving the program, there will be multiple steps/action items you will need to complete. Many of these steps include checking your UM Bursar account, verifying scholarship has disbursed, room clean-up, and more!

First Session students staying for Second Session will not need to change rooms between sessions.

Can I store my belongings in my summer room? No. Student Housing will not allow you to store your belongings in your summer room. You will need to move-out everything. You can rent a local storage room in Oxford to store your belongings until your Fall move-in.

C. Verify your Account Balance

It is the student’s responsibility to verify that they have completed all action items related to accepting their summer financial aid award (if applicable) and have checked their UM Bursar account for disbursal. Your final bill should roughly reflect what was listed on the Cost Estimate listed on the JumpStart website.

For more information on accepting your scholarships and checking your UM Bursar account, please check the Financials and Scholarships section of the Summer HUB.
